German fan had hand broken by wayward shot

Kai Flathmann will receive an apology, and a signed kit, after the incident before the Scotland game on Friday night

A Germany supporter will receive an apology and signed shirt from Niclas Fullkrug, after having his left hand broken by a wayward shot from the striker.
Kai Flathmann had paid €195 (£165) for a front row ticket next to the goal at the Allianz Arena on Friday, for Germany’s game against Scotland but ended up watching the game on his mobile phone from a hospital bed.
Fullkrug demonstrated far greater accuracy during the game after coming on as a substitute to fire home a stunning fourth goal in the 5-1 win. That shot was recorded at 68mph.
German newspaper Bild reported that Fullkrug is due to send the fan a message and jersey by way of apology.
And the incident has not discouraged the 43-year-old from Bremerhaven in northern Germany, who says he will be back behind the goal in Stuttgart on Wednesday to watch Julian Nagelsmann’s side take on Hungary in their second Group A game.
“I sang along to the anthem on the stretcher!” Flathmann told Bild. “I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry! I unfortunately had to give up my dream of [watching] the opening game! But when do you ever get your hand broken by Fullkrug?
“Luckily, he adjusted his alternator screw [in the game] and made it 4-0! On Wednesday we will continue in Stuttgart and I will be there to cheer the team from behind the goal again.”
It was reported that Flathmann had been warned by a friend that Fullkrug was about to shoot, but reacted too late to get out of the way.
Although his left hand was fractured, doctors said he would not need surgery, leaving him free to attend the Hungary game with a heavily bandaged hand and his arm in a sling.
“I have no words, crazy things,” Flathmann said on social media alongside a picture of him from hospital.
“Bild is now reporting on this unfortunate incident and the German FA have been in touch with me as well!”
